Experience. Passion. Diligence. And a drive to get things done.

Phil Vahey, PhD, is no stranger to the tech world or the field of education. He cut his teeth as a software engineer at an Apple subsidiary, working on the game-changing FileMaker Pro database. Yet, he was driven by a higher calling: merging tech with STEM education. Trading code for classrooms, Phil was an early pioneer in the field of Learning Sciences at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Education.

While academia offered novel insights, Phil became frustrated by the gap between the solutions he saw in labs, and the daily student experience in classrooms. After his doctoral journey, he joined SRI Education, focusing on how to create innovative education solutions that scale, managing a portfolio of over $25 million and 20+ impactful projects. His reach extended to consulting with industry leaders and edTech startups, publishing academic journal articles, delivering key reports for the U.S. Department of Education, and fine-tuning SRI Education's value creation process.

Moving to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt (HMH), Phil led multiple initiatives. He guided HMH's competency-based framework, provided Learning Sciences consulting, and launched the Tapestry initiative, knitting together diverse educational frameworks into a unified design strategy.

Now, as the Founder and President of Applied Learning Insights, Phil is ready to work with you to scale and refine your learning solutions. By blending expertise, innovation, and real-world application we can make learning more effective and accessible, meeting learner needs and your organizational goals.
